Cellule Cité Lénine / Chambres, Conversations

Dora Garcia was born in 1965 in Valladolid (Spain), she lives and works in Brussels.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, her work has essentially involved provoking situations which modify the traditional relationships between the artist, the work and the viewer. Since 1999, she has created several works on Internet (www.doragarcia.net). She has notably exhibited in Manifesta 2 in 1998, the Istanbul Biennial in 2003, the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, and in France at the FRAC Lorraine, the FRAC Burgundy and that the Galerie Michel Rein in Paris. Her last projects took place at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and the SMAK in Gand. Using video, writing and performance, she considers herself as a theatrical director, dreaming up scenarios and putting specific rules in place which are relatively simple and which determine the behaviour of her subjects (actors or spectators), not in order to impose a scenario but rather to adapt to the reactions of the other. Dora Garcia’s interest in public urban space is apparent through the creation of works which engage the participation of actors and interaction with the public, in spaces of urban transaction (public space, transport networks, etc).
