In the context of its editorial activities, Les Laboratoires is developing a critical output around its choreographic productions. These efforts have found expression over the past five years in the pages of the Journal des Laboratoires through artist interviews and criticism by estheticians, art historians and art critics. This DVD project, devoted to the ensemble of Jérôme Bel’s work, is part of a desire to broaden and deepen that work. It is motivated by the need for thoughtful discourse within the field of dance, which suffers from larger critical gaps than the visual arts, for example. The choice of Internet and downloadable DVD as platforms is significant because it resolves the difficult question of talking about dance - a dynamic, moving form - on the written page. The site, to be published in stages, will allow the user to browse the entirety of the artist’s output between 1994 and 2005. More than a catalogue, the user will have access to a methodological reckoning of each work: illustrated interviews in which the artist makes every effort to reveal his intentions, references, and what was at stake for him in a particular work. Indeed, the idea is to publish a “reasoned” choreographic catalogue. Each chapter is devoted to one of Jérôme Bel’s dance creations and attempts to unlock the secrets of its construction and elaboration through excerpts from the performances themselves. Throughout the interview the artist is given the possibility of putting his work into critical perspective, of following a train of thought through one or several pieces, and of considering his original intentions and motivations in hindsight.
