"I have never worked with a dramaturge, nor have I wanted to. I have worked with people who help me to understand what I am doing as I am doing it but I have never, ever worked with a specialized expert. I would like to work on a solo. Actually I don’t want to work on a solo .I have no interest, at the moment, in myself as a solo performance figure, as a subject. Which puts me in the ideal position of being a highly skilled performer with little ego or opinion about her own skills or her necessary context.
I would like Les Laboratoires to provide me with local dilettante dramaturges. An important resource of Les Laboratoires is its network of neighborhood people interested in art. I propose to work with a number of different dramaturges-for-a-day( or a week), to generate many versions of the same, initially meaning-free solo. I will be performing my role of a person specialized in studio and performance practice and making available these skills as well as the creative environment they produce. The dramaturges will offer me a context. Of course the most interesting part of this project is the communication between myself and the potential dramaturge- a discussion with a unspecialized person about context and meaning in dance, about the relation between process and product, about the embodiment and the evasion of codes, about the construction of personal liberty through process and social liberty through form.
I see the project as a generator of critical language and critical method. All rehearsals will be documented and transcribed in order to study and share the critical methods produced in rehearsals. I have no fantasy about « popular » thought. These dilettante dramaturges should be selected for their skills and commitment. A possible by-product of this project could be a clearer definition of the job description of dramaturge, as it is, at present, rather mysterious" (Jennifer Lacey)
The presentation of the project Ma Première Fois avec un Dramaturge (« My first experience with a dramaturge ») happens in two times. Jennifer Lacey and the dramaturge-for-a-week perform a renewed version of the solo they have been working on (during about 35 minutes). Then, the audience is invited to exchange with the choreographer and the dramaturge.
