"Sortie de l'usine Lumière" #1 (Leaving the Lumière factory)
: a new workshop open to all entitled “Sortie de l'usine Lumière” is getting underway, to discuss, this time through cinema, the relationships between “art and work”; it will involve, in preparation of the Printemps des Laboratoires #2 dedicated to that issue, monthly screenings of films and artists’ videos dealing with how work is represented in general and how the work of art is represented in particular. For the first meeting, we propose a viewing of Arbeiter verlassen die Fabrik (workers leaving the factory), a 1995 video by Harun Farocki that explores the representation of workers throughout history. The starting point is the first film shown in the history of cinema Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory in Lyon by the Lumières Brothers (1895), the main event being workers escaping their place of employment. In the montage of images from fiction, documentary, advertising and surveillance cameras, work appears as a place of invisibility and blindness to the eye of the camera.
